Discomforting heart burn

Heart burn is what we call the discomfort/pain that is caused by the contents of the stomach as they travel up into the lower part of the esophagus, also known as the gullet. The burning sensation that is felt is due to the acidic nature of the contents of our stomach, which the gullet is not meant to withstand. The presence of the acid in the gullet causes it to become irritated and imflamed. The lower part of our esophagus is in the central chest region, which is why it is dubbed "heart burn". It is important to note that sometimes the pain can also be felt in the upper mid section of the back; and that heartburn as nothing to do with the heart! There is several different things that can cause heartburn with the most simple being what we eat and how we eat it. There is several different types of over the counter solutions to help relieve heartburn and indigestion. Some factors that might contribute to heart burn are: - pregnancy - smoking - eating large meals - being overweight - tight clothing around the waste It is important to control heartburn, because if left untreated it can cause serious problems. Some examples of implications that can be caused by untreated heartburn are: esophagitis, esophageal, bleeding, Barrett's esophagus, and strictures. Generally heartburn can be easily treated by antacids or medication provided by your doctor, so it's not worth the risk.

Are your asthma and allergies caused by a low immune system

Many people who suffer from asthma and allergies don't realize it, but a low immune system is very likely at the root of their problems. Medical experts agree that a lowered or improperly functioning immune system can and does result in several diseases such as asthma, allergies, arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer to name just a few. The body's immune systems first line of defense against disease are barriers that prevent antigens, which are large protein molecules of bacteria, viruses, chemicals and other substances that appear harmful from entering your body. The barriers include your skin, mucus, cough reflex, stomach acid and even enzymes in your tears, which destroy toxins. If the antigen or toxin manages to get past these barriers, then the immune system launches a second line of defense, found in your blood. They are white blood cells, which perform a protective function by seeking out and destroying foreign protein antigens. If you suffer from a low immune system it is important to avoid things that suppress or act to destroy it, such as a high cholesterol diet, heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium), fat, alcohol, fried foods, food additives, obesity, industrial pollutants, pesticides, herbicides, stress, prescription drugs, too much sunlight, tobacco, and radiation. Unfortunately, there is no "magic bullet" that you can take to quickly repair your immune system, but there are several ways to help build and support it by providing your body with proper nutrition, regular exercise, adequate rest, relaxation and maintaining a positive mental attitude. Taking the following dietary steps will help protect and build your immune system: 1. Limit saturated and trans fats, food additives and alcohol 2. Take a good quality multi-vitamin/mineral supplement daily 3. Ensure your diet includes adequate protein 4. Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily. 5. Eat 3 to 4 servings of vegetables daily. 6. Eat 3 to 4 servings of legumes weekly. 7. Eat 3 to 4 servings of omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods weekly The length of time required to re-build a low immune system of course will vary depending on your individual situation and environmental exposure to immune system suppressants. This is not an overnight process, for some people it can take three months to two years. Obviously, the higher your exposure has been to immuno-suppressants, the longer it will take to build your immune system. Children tend to heal much more quickly than adults or the elderly. People with allergies and asthma will find that their asthma and allergy symptoms become less frequent and less severe when their immune systems are strong. It's important to avoid using allergy and asthma drugs, which have toxic side effects and act to lower the immune system. There are natural supplements that safely and effectively eliminate allergy and asthma symptoms.

Get lower back pain relief after knowing its cause

No single cause for lower back pain can be defined in isolation. It is because the types of back pains are many. Understand the pain in its proper perspective, and then decide about the type of treatment that you intend to pursue. In the USA, the survey reports indicate that four out of five adults experience back pain at one time or the other during their lives. Your back is such a big area, and the pain could be in any part. But the severity of the pain has nothing to do with the damage you have suffered. A small strain, can give you unbearable pain. A big muscle-wound may not do much of the damage. Your back is a long rectangular park. Many body parts are covered under its flat area. Any disturbed area can generate pain. Plus, there are many parts of the spinal anatomy which can cause a great amount of pain! In the lower portion of the back, there is a cluster of nerve roots that go to the arms and legs. Any irritation there causes lower back pain. It is usually due to the irritation in the smaller nerves that innervate the spine in the lower portion of the back. Muscles may be strained. There could be injuries of joints, bones, ligaments and inter-vertebral discs that may cause you severe lower back pain. The causes of lower back pain are at times difficult to understand and yet you experience it. When pain is there, it has to be treated as such. It is only you that can think about the immediate cause that has preceded your back pain. Is it due to wrong posture while you were sleeping? Is it due to an uneven bed? Is it due to heavy work pressure you are facing these days or long time sitting or standing job? Whatever the reason may be, keep in mind that you cannot start taking over-the-counter medications just because you have pain in the lower backside. These hard medications can create more problems to your existing troubles. Some types of back pains are capable of creating a surgical emergency. You need to adopt such procedures only based on your doctor's recommendations. They are: 1. Sudden bowel and bladder inconsistency 2. Step-by-step increasing weakness 3. Sudden and severe pain in the abdomen and lower back 4. Back pain due to muscle strain. Regular exercise and regulated diet habits are the permanent solutions to back pains. Always understand the reasons for your back pain and go ahead with the consistent treatment. Any odds and treatments that are not methodical will only aggravate your lower back pain.

Medicare provides prescription medicines

When the Medicare prescription drug benefit begins in 2006, it will provide the most help to those with the greatest financial and medical need. Over 14 million Medicare beneficiaries-those with the most limited income and assets - can get significant financial help from the government to pay for their medicines. The 6.4 million beneficiaries who have both Medicaid and Medicare have their prescription needs covered currently by Medicaid. In 2006, they will be automatically moved to Medicare for their prescription coverage. While those with limited resources have their medical needs covered by Medicaid, many of the remaining eight million low-income beneficiaries (those with income below $14,355/individual or $19,245/couple) are without prescription drug insurance. The Medicare drug benefit and the financial "extra help" are predicted to be a huge relief for these beneficiaries. With the "extra help," they will have little or no premiums and deductibles, as well as minimal co-payments for their medications. The financial need for these eight million low-income Medicare beneficiaries is clearly apparent, but what may be less obvious is the medical need they face. They are more likely to suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease than those with higher incomes, and they are more likely to have more than one chronic condition. With this medical burden, access to prescription medications can make a real difference in their health.

A brief history of anesthetics

: Anesthetics have been used for thousands of years. In fact, the first recorded use of anesthetics was actually in the 'pre-history' era, an era of human history predating written text. Early Uses of Herbal Anesthetics In the pre-history era, anesthetics were herbal in nature. Opium poppies are known to have been harvested as early as 4200 BC, and these plants were farmed first in the Sumerian Empire. The first recorded uses of anesthetics containing opium preparations was in 1500 BC, and by 1100 BC, civilizations in Cyprus and other locations were farming and harvesting the plants. Opium poppies were introduced to India and China in 330 BC and 600 to 1200 AD, respectively. Other types of herbal anesthetics were in use in China during this era as well. In the second century, the Chinese physician Hua Tuo is known to have used an anesthetic derived from cannabis to perform abdominal surgery. In Europe, Asia, and the Americas, several other 'solanum' plant species were used as anesthetics, including mandrake, henbane, and several datura species. Each of these contains a potent tropane alkaloid. In the classical Greek and Roman eras, prominent figures such as Hippocrates and Pliny the Elder noted the uses of opium and solanum-containing plants. In the Americas, the leaves of the coca plant (from which cocaine is derived) were an often-used anesthetic. This was applied by Incan shamans who would chew coca leaves and then spit the leaves into wounds to administer a local anesthetic. Herbal anesthetics of these types were widely used for several centuries; however they were not without drawbacks. One of the main problems with the use of herbal anesthetics was in administering the right dosage-too little would have no effect, and too much often killed the patient. Standardization of anesthetics was difficult, but was achieved to a certain degree prior to the nineteenth century by categorizing anesthetics according to the location in which anesthetic plants were grown. The Discovery of Morphine In 1804, a German pharmacist named Friedrich Wilhelm extracted morphine from the opium poppy, and named the compound 'morphium', for the Greek god of sleep and dreams. However, morphine was not widely used for nearly fifty years. In 1853, the hypodermic needle was developed, and thanks to this new method of administration, the use of morphine increased substantially. Morphine was then widely used as an anesthetic. In 1874, a morphine derivative called diacetylmorphine-commonly known as heroin-was developed. Nearly twice as potent as morphine, heroin was marketed for a short time by Bayer, starting in 1898. However, it was just 16 years later in 1914 that the possession of morphine, heroin, and cocaine without a prescription was outlawed in the US due to the highly addictive nature of these substances. Development of Inhalant Anesthetics Oral and inhalant anesthetics were utilized historically by Muslim anesthesiologists, and the use of these preparations was well known in the Islamic Empire. Several hundred surgical operations were performed which used sponges soaked in narcotic preparations, placed over the face of the individual undergoing surgery. In the Western world, the development of inhalant anesthetics, along with the use of sterile surgical techniques developed by Joseph Lister, was one of the main keys to performing successful surgery in the nineteenth century. During the nineteenth century, both carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide were used in experimental surgical procedures. While the use of carbon dioxide as an anesthetic never became popular, nitrous oxide did in fact become very widely used. The anesthetic properties of nitrous oxide were first noted by Humphry Davy, a British chemist, in a paper published in 1800. However, it was not until several decades later in the 1840s that nitrous oxide became more widely used. One of the first successful uses of the gas for painless tooth extraction was carried out by American dentist William Thomas Green Morton, in 1846. During the same decade, an inhalant anesthetic called diethyl ether was also used for tooth extraction. Diethyl ether was originally synthesized by German physician Valerius Cordus in 1540; however it was not until the 1840s that the first public demonstration of the use of ether occurred. A decade earlier, in the 1830s, chloroform had also been developed. This became more popular in Britain, but even so the dangers of both ether and chloroform were well-noted. Modern Anesthetics Modern anesthetics are of two types: general and local anesthetics. Local anesthetics include substances such as lidocaine and procaine. These work by preventing transmission of nerve impulses in the area where the anesthetic is administered. General anesthetics, on the other hand, are more similar in nature to nitrous oxide in their method of delivery, and in fact this inhalant anesthetic is still in use. Inhalation anesthetics are usually fluorochemicals (isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane) that have much lower flammability than diethyl ether, thus they are much safer to use in the operating room.
